Sciatic pain is the condition associated with the inflammation of sciatic nerve. It is characterized by tenderness and pain that is caused in the leg. It generally begins in the buttocks and then extends down the lower leg and back of the thigh and to the sole of foot. Patient with sciatic pain may experience pain along the outer side of lower leg to the top of the foot. Patient also complains of pain in the lower back. Knowing a little more about sciatic pain will help you to understand the causes and symptoms of sciatic pain.
Sciatic pain is mainly caused by irritation of roots of lumbosacral and lower lumbar spine. Some common causes of sciatica pain are as follows:
- Narrowing of the spinal canal in the lower back (lumbar spinal stenosis)
- Degenerative disc disease which causes breakdown of discs that act as a cushion between the vertebrae
- Spnodylolisthesis (a condition in which one vertebra overlaps another)
Other possible reasons that may give rise to sciatic pain are overweight, wearing high heels, lack of regular exercise and sleeping on too soft mattress.
Knowing a little more about sciatic pain includes determination of signs and symptoms. For some people, the sciatic pain may be severe and unbearable. While in some cases, the pain may be irritating and infrequent, but possibly may get worse. Some common symptoms of sciatic pain are:
* Pain in leg or rear which may worsen when sitting
* Tingling or burning down the leg
* Patient with sciatic pain may experience numbness, weakness in leg or difficulty in moving the foot or leg
* There may be a constant pain on one side of the rear
* A shooting pain in leg makes it difficult for the patient to stand up
Usually, only one side of lower body is affected by sciatica. The sciatic pain extends from the lower back through the back of the thigh and then down through the leg. The foot or toes are also involved depending on the site where sciatic nerve is affected.
If you understand a little more about sciatic pain, it is possible to get appropriate treatment. The diagnosis of sciatic pain is made from the symptoms and MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) or CT (Computerized Tomography) scan. Having plenty of rest is the primary treatment option for sciatic pain, which can help to reduce the inflammation of nerves. As sciatic pain originates from the combination of inflammation and pressure on the nerve root, the treatment for sciatic pain focuses on relieving inflammation and pressure.
Non-surgical treatments for sciatic pain include a combination of medical and non-medical treatments. Various medications like muscle relaxants and analgesics are prescribed. Another alternative is injecting anesthetic agents into the area around spinal cord. If sciatic pain does not respond to these treatments, then surgical options such as microsurgery or percutaneous removal of disk fragments are opted for.
If you are eager to know a little more about sciatic pain, then you can refer to several books, magazines and medical journals. There are many websites that are dedicated to the information related to this subject to help you better understand all aspects of sciatic pain.
